After reading chapter 2: “Theories in the Sociology of Education” I was introduced to numerous theories with regards to education and the school system. I found Marxist theory to be rather interesting in regards to the social class systems. It was telling how the education system reinforces these classes and how it ties in with Althusser’s concept of the hidden curriculum. The connections they make between capitalist economy and the school system are fascinating (pg. 24).
The effects of class differentials when it came to educational attainment stood out for me. As future teachers we will see students from a variety of social and cultural backgrounds. Reading the primary and secondary effects were certainly eye-opening. Students that came from the working class having less ambitious career goals and lower expectations was disheartening to read (pg. 41)
Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological Model was used in my practicum school to show the multitude of levels of support a children needs to learn at school. The inner circle was the children’s main support which came from teachers and educational assistants. The next circle involved parents and peers and so on until the outer circle involved people and organizations less directly involved with their learning (pg. 44).
Discussion question: How as teachers can we encourage student’s from lower class homes to have higher expectations for themselves?
