Cheryl Wood (Blog 6)

This week’s chapter deals with socialization in the schooling process. As we grow up we spend a large portion of our life in school. School is a huge factor in our socializing. On page 161 the text states that a student spends an average of 1400 hours in the school setting per year not including extracurricular activities.
As educators we have to provide the students with a positive school climate and be aware of what we are teaching and role modeling to our students. We have to create strong school bonds to help deter students from becoming delinquents. On page 182 the text states that “The social climate within schools and classrooms has important effects on children who display early signs of behavioral problems.” If we can help catch these signs earlier on we can have a better chance in changing the students outcome on whether or not they become a delinquent or not.

On page 176 the text discusses school uniforms. I found this topic quite interesting. Growing up, I came from a small town. The schools I attended did not have school uniforms. We were able to wear whatever we wanted for the most part although we were not supposed to have any of the 3 B’s sticking out, (boobs, belly or butt). The odd time teachers would have to talk to specific students about their attire but for the most part there were not too many complaints. The closest I have gotten to uniforms in the school setting would be our sport uniforms. Even for my grade 12 graduation our school doesn't wear caps or gowns. All the graduates wore our grad dresses and tuxedos throughout the day. We were not pushed to conform to dress alike. Maybe this helped with students not being delinquent due to no enforcement as to what we had to wear.

Discussion Question:

Are school uniforms necessary for all school? Should school uniforms become mandatory throughout all schools?
