This weeks reading I found to be a little disheartening. I think it is stressful growing up in this generation because we do have a lot going against us. There are more expenses that have to be paid, the cost of living has gone up a huge amount, and the job market is getting far more competitive. I personally am very lucky because my parents only had 2 children, so they pay for both mine and my sisters schooling. I can't express how thankful I am to my parents for doing this for me. To not have to worry about paying for tuition is a pretty incredible feeling. With that being said, I don't feel as if people see me as serious as someone who has to pay for their own school. I feel like I'm looked down on because I don't have to pay for school, like people don't think I really deserve to be there. This is a difficult feeling because I don't ever want to tell anyone that I don't pay for school. On page 232 it says "tuition fees obtained from students account for around 20 percent of the total cost of education". I think that is a large amount, and personally I find it unfair. For some people they can't afford to go to school so they have to take student loans, which is unfortunate because then they start their life in debt. That is a stressful situation to be in.
On page 249 in the textbook there is a list that consist of 5 different characteristics that result in "being considered an adult", these include "completing education, leaving the parental home, completing one year of full-time employment, entering a spousal or "conjugal" partnership, and having children". This is ridiculous in my eyes because there are some people who have completed this list that are so immature I wouldn't consider them more of an "adult" then I am. Currently I have 0/5 transitions. That doesn't mean I'm not an adult, and I think people from different generations need to understand the situations we are in nowadays. Every job is beginning to need a university degree, and university is getting more expensive. How can we be expected to complete school, have a full time job, have our own house, and still try to maintain our sanity? Sure there are many people who do this, but their mental stability is put to the test, they are constantly stresssed, that isn't fair to them.
The textbook also talks about the difference between education and employers required skills (244). This is something that always bothers me, people won't hire you unless you have experience, but you can't get experience unless you get hired. I completely agree that universtiy doens't prepare you for the real world. I personally learn more through the experiences in practicum then I do in the classroom, and that is becasue we get to deal with real life situations and we get to work through it ourselves. I believe that if employers want a truly good worker, they should find a employee and be willing to put the time in to create a valuable employee.
Discussioin Question: How do you feel about the generation that we live in? Do you think it is more stressful then our parents?
