Matthew Sysa Blog 8

The reading for this week was chapter eight in the textbook which talked about school to work transitions. In today’s society it is considered that to achieve “personal economic success.” (p. 230) you must attain some sort of post-secondary education. This forces most young adults such as myself to “pay tuition fees in order to attend a post-secondary institution.” (p. 231). These tuition fees lead to many young people attaining large amounts of debt before they enter the workforce. It was believed that once we achieved our degree, we would enter the workforce, start earning a full time salary and be able to pay off our debts. However, this has not been the case for many young adults who have completed post-secondary education as they have faced “difficulty finding a suitable job or even a job at all.” (p. 239). This has led to a waste of young people’s talents and forced many young adults who have attained a post-secondary education to work in dead end medial service jobs such as in restaurants or retail where their post-secondary education means nothing more than a piece of paper just to make ends meet.

Discussion Question: What are ways that we can increase the opportunity for young adults with post-secondary education to achieve jobs in the field they have spent all this time and money studying in?
