While reading Chapter 6: Socialization in the Schooling Process, I focused primarily on the
concept of streaming (p. 167) as mentioned in the text. The text suggests that
“streaming is a topic that is hotly debated”(p. 168) and having some personal
experience with this concept, there is a very clear indication why that is.
I had mentioned in a previous blog that although I am
interested in math, it has never been one of my stronger subjects and I believe
my love/dislike relationship began in my Grade 6 math class. My teacher at the
time deliberately separated those students in the class that understood the
assignment, leaving those that did not understand the topic, embarrassed, alone
and completely ashamed. Fast track a few years down the road, I went on to
fail my high school Applied Math class (phew… glad I got that out in the open!)
and eventually ended up taking Consumer Math – which in my school was known as
the more “practical” course. I was still very much embarrassed to take a course
that none of my friends were in. However, had my Grade 6 teacher taken the
opportunity to explain and put forth some effort into my understanding of the
concept, I may have been more prepared for my Applied Math or even Pre-Calculus
course. I can’t really dwell too much on the “what if’s”, everything happens
for a reason.
Although at the time I may not have appreciated my
teacher’s suggestion to take Consumer Math, I can honestly say, I STILL use
many of the things learned in the course ex: writing cheques, my income taxes
etc. The text even mentions that: “Students develop valuable knowledge and
skills that will allow them to make informed decisions as they become
independent citizens”(p. 169). I eventually graduated high school (on time with
the rest of my friends) with Honours and, now, I couldn’t be more proud of my
accomplishment. After all, I guess every cloud has a silver lining…
Discussion Question:
If applicable, how do you feel streaming either
benefitted or disadvantaged your schooling experience?
