This
week’s reading entailed learning all about socialization in the schooling
process. I enjoyed many of the topics in the book and found them very
interesting. I found the information on student relationships with teachers to
be very informative. I found the information on teacher abuse really
interesting. I feel that it is so important to stay patient with students, even
if they are constantly interrupting class discussions. I always try (in my practicum)
to pay extra attention to the students who constantly interrupt and give them
my full-undivided attention. I feel that if I am able to form a strong base
with my students that they, in turn will be more respectful to the class and i
in the long term. I fell that it is important form a good relationship with
each and every student in my class so that they “feel more connected to their
school, and experience positive outcomes” (180). I found it very alarming that “the likelihood of a child
experiencing verbal abuse from a teacher is also fairly consistent across
grades” (181). I find this
alarming for a number of reasons. I know that teachers do talk about the issues
of particular children in their classrooms to other teachers, but how is a
child suppose to excel in school if teachers are constantly yelling at him/her?
I think that with each new teacher, a child should get a fresh start, and not
have to be subjected to negative allegations that have been made against him or
her. I also found it alarming that “teachers who hold negative stereotypes
about low-achieveing or minority students also expect students to consistently
achieve poorly” (181). I just
think that is terrible. Our job as educators is to let every student in our
classroom achieve to their fullest potential. I think a teacher has the ability
to transform a child’s school experience and make it into a positive, fun
experience for them. I think that every student no matter what his or her
appearance, skin color, or race should receive access to a equal education.
Discussion question: What are some techniques that teachers
can use to get low-achieving students to become interested in school so that
they can flourish in the classroom.
