After reading chapter six in the textbook “Socialization in the Schooling Process”, I was not surprised that the emotional connection between students and teachers especially in early years had a profound impact on their social development (pg. 180). Teachers are with their students for around eight hours every day and have an influence on them. If students have a positive relationship with their students they are more likely to enjoy coming to school and feel more connected. Students who don’t get along with their teacher are more likely to have behaviour problems, become distant and unfocused (pg. 181). This is not ideal for either the student or teacher because neither is getting the full benefit of the schooling experience and they may distract the rest of the class.
Growing up I never had a dress code and as the textbook states I think that many schools dress codes are overly restrictive especially towards girls and stigmatizes a certain type of female body (pg. 176). I think that a dress code may make students feel marginalized and make them dress a certain way to fit in. It takes away their freedom of expression and their individuality.
Discussion question: What do you believe is the most important factor in student’s ability to socialize with others?
