While reading this introductory chapter I was concerned with my lack of knowledge regarding the First Nations education system. I found the situations that are being discussed within the first chapter to be intriguing and astonishing.
A point that stood out to me was that First Nations education is a matter of federal government, contrasting with all other education systems being run on a provincial level. Another issue that interested me was the lack of official curriculum set for First Nations education; instead they are presented with guidelines by the provincial governments. These issues got me thinking that if there is no clear curriculum established then the education being provided could not possibly be fulfilling the needs of the Attawapiskat First Nation’s students and all other First Nations students. Since we are all entitled to an equal education it is disappointing as a training educator to see these issues are not being properly addressed. I believe it is our role as educators to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to an education that maintains value and relevance.
In the future, I hope to stay aware of issues such as the ones discussed in the first chapter and perhaps find a way to contribute to a richer learning experience in First Nations education.
Discussion Question - Would it be beneficial to introduce an official curriculum to First Nations education, or would it create further tension on an already strained issue?
