(Blog 6) Stephanie Webster

This week’s chapter reading in the text explored Socialization and the Schooling Process. In Canada, “children spend 1400 hours in the school setting per year not including extracurricular activities and the school preparatory work, like homework”(p.161). That is an enormous amount of time being spent at school, and clearly this is major agent of socialization. Schooling is considered to be a source of secondary socialization, which refers to “the social learning that children undergo when they enter other social institutions, like school”(p.161). It is so important as a future early years teacher, to consider the role that you play in the lives of your students on their “emotional, social, behavioral, and academic adjustment “(p.180).  Some of the benefits for students of having a good relationship with their teacher include that they are “likely to have better mental health, feel more connected to their school, and experience positive academic outcomes”(p. 180). I think that it is easy to forget how influential you are in each and everyone of your students in your class. You may have 25 students to attend to in your class, but they only have one teacher to look up to.

Discussion: Knowing the huge impact that teachers have on the influence of their students overall well being, not just academic success, how do you envision yourself ensuring that your classroom is a fair and inclusive community for all students?
