Craig blog 5

This week's reading was about the curriculum in Canada and how it can be influenced. One thing I found interesting was that parents can have an impact on some things that are taught in the curriculum. (pg 131) Not that they are able to change the entire thing, but to have a say in some things is good. I agree that there are things being taught that shouldn't be, and are inappropriate, and so for parents to be able to have a say in some of these things is good. The book talked about the curriculum in some provinces starting to discuss sexual orientation and sexual health to children as young as grade 3. (pg134) This seems unbelievably young to me because grade 3 children don't and shouldn't be taking part in these kinds of acts in the first place. I feel that bringing it up in class would only open doors to them that shouldn't be opened. I understand that this is not the popular viewpoint anymore, but from a moral standpoint this only makes sense to me. I do appreciate that teachers must let parents know in advance that these subjects will be talked about so that the kids can be pulled out during this time. (pg 135) If inappropriate things are going to be taught, I would appreciate this as a parent. Just like kids whose parents don't want them in class during a religious instruction time, this is a freedom that parents should have. These topics are quite difficult and controversial, and I understand how this could be a very tough issue for teachers/parents alike. There is no reason for anybody, Christians or not, to get upset about these issues, but as long as morality is being questioned I do feel that these discussions should be optional.
Discussion: How would you respond if the curriculum was teaching something you didn't agree with?
